From Arthur Levine, your Guide to Theme Parks
After years of haggling and false starts, the redevelopment of New York's fabled Coney Island takes a major step forward with the opening of Luna Park. When it debuts Memorial Day weekend, it will offer 19 rides, mostly of the spinning variety and all off-the-shelf models. Will Luna Park help restore Coney Island's faded glory?

Will Coney Island's Luna Park Shoot the Moon?
Coney Island proponents certainly welcome Luna Park, but some question whether its size, at a little over three acres, and scope can provide the spark that The People's Playground needs to truly recapture its prominence. With redevelopment now underway, the architects of change need to find a delicate balance between bringing Coney Island into the 21st century and irrevocably severing its ties to the past. Between creating a gentrified, movie-set facsimile of the cherished landmark and preserving an authentic sense of the place. Between developing attractions that will bring in well-heeled guests to generate big profits and shutting out the egalitarian masses that have always been its audience. Read more about Luna Park.

The Cyclone at Coney Island
A treasured piece of living history (a term that applies to much of Coney Island), the classic Cyclone evokes an earlier era, yet packs a surprisingly potent punch--even when compared to modern-day coaster behemoths. It is, perhaps, the archetypal roller coaster and probably the world's most famous thrill machine. While the Cyclone can get more than a bit rough, coaster freaks and casual fans alike nonetheless adore the sentimental favorite.

Read my review of The Cyclone. While you are there, click on "Write a Review" and share your own take on the classic coaster.
