 | London is one of my favorite cities, and I had planned to travel there tomorrow to cover the April 24 launch of the Celebrity Eclipse. However, I got cold feet and decided to stay at home. Too much uncertainty about flights and that pesky volcano for me! Of course, as soon as I canceled, they opened the airports in London, which is good news for all those stranded on both sides of the Atlantic. | |

London is an exciting city with lots of history, artwork, and an English culture that is important to Americans. Many cruise ships sailing northern Europe embark in Harwich, Dover, or Southampton. Some small cruise ships even sail up the Thames and dock right in the heart of the city. London also makes a perfect cruise extension since there are frequent flights between London and the United States.
| Tower of London
The Tower of London is well worth at least a half day or longer. Much of the history surrounding the Tower of London is very gruesome, with many beheadings and political imprisonments. Today, the Beefeater (Yeoman Warder) guards at the Tower of London provide a witty historical tour, and the museum of medieval artifacts is quite impressive. And then there are those magnificent Crown Jewels, which are also kept at the Tower of London.
| Trooping the Color Ceremony for the Queen's Birthday
Each June, Britain celebrates the birthday of Queen Elizabeth at Buckingham Palace with a parade, inspection of the troops, and a flyover of military planes. It's great fun and full of all the pomp and circumstance a visitor might be looking for in London. If you are planning a visit to London in June, try to be at Buckingham Palace from about 10 am to 1:30 pm on June 12.
