| | Lake Compounce and Darien Lake are both great amusement parks and water parks. Let's shine this week's spotlight on the lakeside fun they offer. Also, Ellen DeGeneres brings her show to Universal Orlando and takes a peek at Potter. | | Lots to Like at the Lake Connecticut's Lake Compounce is surrounded by a mountain and (not surprisingly) a lake. It makes great use of its lovely natural resources. Case in point: Boulder Dash, one of the world's best wooden coasters, is built into the side of a mountain. The oldest, continuously operating amusement park in the United States, Lake Compounce is loaded with charm, as well as thrills. Don't believe me? Check out my Lake Compounce photo gallery. | Darien Lake's Expanded Water Park to Make a Splash Up until this year, Darien Lake's water park was comparatively small and sort of nondescript. It was so unremarkable, its name was...Darien Lake's Water Park. Blah. Now undergoing a major expansion, the New York resort, which includes a theme park, hotel, campground, and performing arts center, will get a bunch of new slides and attractions and give its water park a flashy new name: SplashTown at Darien Lake. On tap for the park is the Swirl City 4-slide tower, the Flotation Station lazy river, and the Lazy Days Lagoon wave pool. SplashTown will also offer private cabanas. Read more about SplashTown at Darien Lake. | Take a Peek Inside Harry's Wizarding World As part of her stint hosting her television show from Universal Orlando, Ellen DeGeneres took a couple of cute kids and a video crew along for a sneak peek of The Wizarding World of Harry Potter. While she didn't ride (or didn't film?) the signature attraction, Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey, she did visit Dumbledore's office and the Portrait Gallery inside Hogwart's Castle. You can see those and other just-revealed highlights of the highly anticipated new land in a video posted to The Ellen DeGeneres Show's Web site. | Steel Yourself for Darien Lake's Ride of Steel Its red track dominates the Darien Lake skyline and can be seen from the roadway leading to the park. Just looking at the impossibly high and steep first drop of Ride of Steel from a distance gets your adrenaline pumping. Up close, it takes more than a bit of nerve to hop into line and board the super-sized ride. | | | | Theme Parks Ads | | | | Featured Articles | | | | | More from About.com | | | | | | Disney Trip Planner Everything you need to plan the perfect Disney vacation -- from when to go and what to do, to saving money and picking a hotel.
