From Linda Garrison, your Guide to Cruises
One of the great things about cruise travel is the ability to visit exotic destinations. Cruise ships visit many islands around the world, from the Arctic to the Antarctic, with the Caribbean and the Mediterranean (among others) in between. These three islands are among the many exotic destinations that you can visit on a cruise ship.

Madagascar in the Indian Ocean
Madagascar is found about 200 miles from Africa. It is the 4th largest island in the world and has diverse geography and exotic sites. Much like the continent of Australia, Madagascar's isolation, size, and climate have supported the development of hundreds of endemic species found no where else in the world.

Papua New Guinea in the South Pacific
Papua New Guinea is located on the world's second largest island. Having never traveled to this part of the world, I probably would not have planned a whole vacation around Papua New Guinea. However, the people were warm and welcoming, and the island was fascinating.

Madeira - Atlantic Ocean Island of Eternal Spring
Madeira is southwest of Portugal and off the coast of Africa. The island is breathtakingly beautiful with spectacular views. About the only things lacking on Madeira are flat land and sandy beaches. The Madeirans use terraces and bridges to compensate for the flat land and take the short trip to the neighboring island of Porto Santo to sit on sandy beaches.

Elephant Island, Antarctica
I had heard and read about Elephant Island, where 22 of Ernest Shackleton's crew spent four long, dark Antarctic winter months awaiting rescue, and marveled at their perseverance. However, until I visited Elephant Island on an inflatable Zodiac boat from the Hanseatic cruise ship, I had no idea just how unbelievable their story actually was!
