From Tom Nelson, your Guide to Macs
Last week, a few questions popped up about remotely accessing a Mac. There are a number of commercial applications that will let you access your Mac desktop from just about anywhere. But if you just want to share your Mac on your home network or a small business network, Apple's got you covered. OS X has built-in screen sharing capabilities. If you're intrigued by the thought of sharing your Mac desktop, we have brand new step-by-step guides to get you going.

In the news this week, the Apple Refurb Store lowered the prices on a few select Macs. We also got the first tantalizing look at benchmark results for the recently announced iMacs.

Mac Screen Sharing: Share Your Mac's Screen
Screen sharing is the process of allowing users at a remote computer to see what is happening on your Mac's screen. Mac screen sharing also allows you to remotely view and take control of another Mac's screen.

This can be very handy for getting or giving help with troubleshooting a problem, getting answers to questions about how to use an application, or simply accessing something on your Mac from another computer... Read more

How to Use iChat to Share Your Mac's Screen
iChat, Apple's instant messaging client, has a unique feature that allows you to share your Mac desktop with an iChat buddy. iChat screen sharing lets you show off your desktop or ask a buddy for help with a problem. It also allows you to take control of a buddy's desktop to help him or her out with a problem.

But what's really cool about iChat screen sharing is that you can share your Mac's screen over the Internet. Even better, you don't have to configure port forwarding, firewalls, or your router. If you can use iChat with your remote buddy, then screen sharing should work (assuming there's a fast enough network connection between the two of you). ... Read more

Safari Plug-ins: How to Remove Safari Plug-ins
Safari, Apple's web browser, is one of the best browsers for the Mac. Out of the box, Safari is fast, and can handle just about any type of web site.

As is true of most browsers, you can expand Safari's feature set by adding modules called plug-ins. Plug-ins are small programs that can add functionality that a software program lacks; they can also enhance a program's existing capabilities.

Plug-ins can have a down side. Poorly written plug-ins can slow down Safari's web rendering performance. Plug-ins can compete with other plug-ins, causing stability issues, or replace a program's built-in functionality with methods that aren't as, well, functional. Whether you want to add functionality or fix a plug-in problem, it's a good idea to know how to find out what plug-ins Safari is currently using, and how to remove the ones you don't wish to use... How to Calibrate Your Portable Mac's Battery
New or old, all of the MacBook, MacBook Pro, and MacBook Air portables use a battery that has an internal processor designed to maximize battery performance. One of the functions of the battery's internal processor is to estimate remaining battery life by analyzing the current state of the battery charge, as well as the rate at which power is being consumed.

In order to make accurate predictions about remaining battery charge, the battery and its processor need to undergo a calibration routine. The calibration routine helps the processor gauge the battery's current performance and make accurate predictions about the remaining battery charge... Read more
