Roller Coasters

From Arthur Levine, your Guide to Theme Parks
Many seasonal parks may be putting the padlocks on their turnstiles after this weekend's final Halloween fling, but there are plenty of new goodies awaiting theme park fans to sustain us through the long off-season. Let's take a look at a few of the new developments, shall we?

The (Sonic) Boom is Off the Rosa
Everything appears be up to speed at Ferrari World, the indoor theme park set to debut today in Abu Dhabi, part of the United Arab Emirates. A hybrid Epcot-type pavilion/Six Flags-type amusement park/corporate hospitality center, the new park will showcase the legendary automaker through sophisticated dark rides and other cutting-edge theme park technology. But, the most intriguing feature of Ferrari World will be Formula Rossa, the world's fastest roller coaster. Rad more about Ferrari World.

Swim with Sharks? Good Reef!
Discovery Cove, the exclusive swim-with-the-dolphins park adjacent to SeaWorld Orlando, will be getting a major expansion in 2011 with the addition of The Grand Reef. As with the rest of the park, the new area will offer guests opportunities to interact with animals and relax in a luxurious setting. The new attraction will feature snorkeling among rays, starfish, and--yikes!--sharks as well as a unique underwater walking tour with dive helmets. Read and see more in The Grand Reef at Discovery Cove preview photo gallery.

All in All, Another Brick in the Fall
Block out some dates for October 2011. That's when Legoland Florida is set to open on the site of the former Cypress Gardens. The Legoland folks released more details about the new park yesterday, including a rundown of the Lego-themed lands it has planned.

Like its sister park, Legoland California, it will be geared to the 12-and-under set and will feature lots of hands-on activities as well as mild to slightly wild coasters and other rides. Instead of the water ski show that was one of Cypress Gardens' staples, Legoland Florida will offer a pirate-themed water stunt show. The lovely botanical gardens that have delighted guests for decades, however, will remain. Read more about Legoland Florida.

Shining a Light on Green Lantern
As an update to my report last week about all of the new coaster goodies Six Flags Magic Mountain will be offering in 2011, the park supplemented its preview video with some newly released info and photos. Now that I have the official lowdown on the new "ZacSpin" Green Lantern coaster, the rehabbed and renamed Superman: Escape from Krypton launch coaster, and the transplanted junior coaster set to open next year, I've put together an overview of Six Flags Magic Mountain's exciting 2011 season.

A Lotta New Water at Schlitterbahn Kansas City
The first Schlitterbahn water park outside of Texas, Schlitterbahn Kansas City had a stellar season this year (its first full one) according to a park spokesperson. 2011 will bring more water park goodies to the Kansas attraction (and presumably, even more guests through the turnstiles). The expansion will include a "Boogie Bahn" FlowRider surfing ride, a whitewater tube chute, three new slides, and something the park is describing as a record-breaking rapids river. I'm not sure what records will be broken (the fastest? the longest? the wettest? the coldest?), but it sounds intriguing. As with other Schlitterbahn parks, guests will be able to float from one attraction to the next via a ride-up "Aqua Veyer" using the "Transpotainment" system. (You gotta love the wacky names.) Read more about Schlitterbahn Kansas City.
