From Tom Nelson, your Guide to Macs
We're expecting Apple to announce today that OS X 10.7 (Lion) is in development and will be released sometime in 2011, most likely in the late summer, during or after the annual Apple developer's conference.

But while OS X 10.7 may get the lion's share of the attention, we also expect more immediate gratification, such as a new MacBook Air, iLife '11, iWork '11, and maybe a surprise or two.

Check back later today for a look at Apple's announcements.

Apple Q4 Results: $20.34 Billion in Revenue
Apple continues to be on a roll, with Q4 results that are, at least so far, the best quarter yet for the denizens of the Cupertino Campus. Revenue for the quarter came in at $20.34 billion, with a net quarterly profit of $4.31 billion.

During the fiscal 4th quarter, Apple shipped 14.1 million iPhones, a 91 percent uptick in sales over the previous year. iPad sales reached 4.2 million, and the Mac had sales of 3.9 million, up 27 percent year-over-year... Read more

A Lion Is Coming to Your Mac; OS X 10.7, That Is
Apple sent out press invitations last Wednesday, announcing a "Back to the Mac" event for October 20th. The invite included the usual Apple logo, but this time, the logo had a lion peeking out from behind it. Now, don't expect Lion (OS X 10.7) to be released at this gathering. Apple tends to show a preview of an upcoming major OS X release well ahead of its actual release. Chances are Lion won't be heading out of its corporate den until late summer 2011.

Unfortunately, the press event is occurring too late in the day for details to be included in this newsletter. But if you check back later on, I'll have a writeup on the announcements Apple makes today... Read more

Among other things, Disk Utility can erase, format, repair, and partition hard drives, as well as create RAID arrays. In this guide, we'll use Disk Utility to erase a volume and format a hard drive... Read more

Do You Need to Defragment a Mac's Hard Drive?
Apple supplies a handy application for working with hard drives called Disk Utility. If you open up Disk Utility, you'll notice that it doesn't include a tool for defragmenting your hard drive. The reason for this perceived oversight is that a Mac running any version of OS X later than 10.2 doesn't need to be defragmented. OS X has its own built-in safeguards that prevent files from becoming fragmented in the first place... Read more
