From Arthur Levine, your Guide to Theme Parks
Wooh. Coaster geeks like me on the interwebs were going bonkers last week after Busch Gardens Tampa announced that the name of its new coaster would be Cheetah Hunt instead of the name the park had strongly hinted it would be for months: Cheetaka. A coaster by any other name would still give a sweet ride, but what was Busch Gardens thinking?

Also, Six Flags will once again be king of the coaster Mountain, and Canobie Lake Park is gonna get Untamed next year.

Has Busch Gardens Cheetah-ed Itself ?
The new thrill machine coming to Busch Gardens Tampa next spring looks to be wonderful--possibly the highlight of the 2011 coaster crop. With three (three!) magnetic launches built into the course of the ride, it will deliver what would appear to be a slick, sleek, smooth, fast, and deliriously fun coaster experience.

But some (many?) may misinterpret the ride's name, "Cheetah Hunt," to mean that passengers will be on the hunt for cheetahs. The park's intended theme, however, is that riders will themselves become cheetahs racing across the plain in pursuit of their prey. Sister park SeaWorld Orlando developed a similar you-are-the-animal theme for its wonderful flying coaster, Manta. Humans hunting for cheetahs is surely not the message that an animal park closely tied to preservation and conservation efforts would want to impart.

Regardless of any controversy about the name, the new coaster should be great. Read more about Cheetah Hunt.

Six Flags to Be King of the (Coaster) Mountain
California's Six Flags Magic Mountain had been in a coaster war with Cedar Point for the title of "most number of coasters on the planet" with the two parks constantly upping the ante and trading bragging rights. A new, less coaster-crazy Six Flags management team, plagued by huge corporate debt and a rotten economy, however, ceded the title to the Ohio park a few years ago and seemed to end the coaster confrontation--until now. The latest crew of Six Flags honchos just announced that Magic Mountain will be getting an additional two coasters, including a Green Lantern-themed "ZacSpin" model, in 2011, bringing the park's total to 18 and reclaiming the world's record.

Canobie Lake Park to Get Untamed Next Year
A relatively small, traditional, family-run trolley park that dates back to 1902, New Hampshire's Canobie Lake Park has an unrushed and charming vibe that distinguishes it from its more boisterous and wild corporate brethren, such as Six Flags and Cedar Fair parks. But for the 2011 season, Canobie is going to get a bit more wild--or Untamed to be more precise. That's the name of the new ride set to launch next spring. Read more.
