Tips & Tricks

From Tom Nelson, your Guide to Macs
This week sees Apple readying Lion for release. It's wrapping up loose ends, pushing developers to submit Lion applications, and getting the Mac App Store ready for the expected onslaught.

While Apple is getting ready, so should those of you who plan to make the switch. This week's newsletter has news and tips for getting ready for Lion.

And even though it looks like many About: Macs readers will be upgrading, some of course will not. For those of you who aren't interested in Lion, I've included a number of tips and troubleshooting articles to help you keep your Mac in tip-top shape.

Which Applications Will Work With OS X Lion?
If you're planning to upgrade to OS X Lion, it would be handy to know ahead of time which of the applications installed on your Mac are compatible with OS X Lion, and which ones aren't. Such a list would be very helpful; alas, one doesn't exist yet, although there are web sites trying to compile such a list from early Lion users.

You don't actually have to wait for a compatibility list; you can use the System Profiler in Snow Leopard to discover which applications won't work with Lion... Read more

Quicken Abandons Mac Users Who Wish to Move to Lion
I received an interesting email from a reader expressing his displeasure with Quicken for abandoning its Mac user base. Essentially, Intuit is telling users of Quicken for Mac (any version) that it hasn't gotten around to making a version that will run under Lion, and that if you wish to continue to use Quicken, it would be a good idea not to upgrade.

Intuit has had more than five years to upgrade Quicken to use current Mac technology. Instead, it chose to do as little as possible, just the bare minimum to keep a five-year-old version of Quicken functioning. I plan to do the minimum with Quicken: drag it to the trash and move on... How to Upgrade to Snow Leopard
It seems a bit odd to provide directions for upgrading to Snow Leopard, an OS that Apple is about to replace with Lion. But because Apple will only sell OS X Lion through the Mac App Store, if you plan to upgrade, you must be running a version of OS X that allows the Mac App Store to run, and that means Snow Leopard (or later)... Make the Most of the Finder Sidebar
A Finder window sidebar is a handy list of commonly used folders, drives, and network locations. Apple pre-populates it with what it considers to be most useful items for most users, but there's no reason not to add, remove, or rearrange items. After all, it's your sidebar, and setting it up just the way you like it is a key to productivity... Read more
