On the 24th Florence will celebrate its patron saint, San Giovanni, with all sorts of things during the day, and in the evening fireworks shot off from Piazzale Michelangelo, the square overlooking the city designed by Giuseppe Poggi in 1869. It's a big event, and though the blasts don't start until about 10 PM, the river banks will all be packed long before then, as will the bridges.
