| | The theme this week is backups. Why, you may ask? Well, I'll tell you. It's because backing up data on a regular basis is one of the most important computer-related tasks. If you use Apple's Time Machine, then you're way ahead of most individuals, but there's more to backups than Time Machine. In the news this week, Amazon accidentally revealed that iLife '11 will be released soon by posting the product with a 2-4 week delivery schedule. Unfortunately, Amazon didn't reveal what's in the new version of iLife, and what, if anything, has been discarded. | | Back Up or Move Mail, Bookmarks, Address Book, iCal Many applications, such as Address Book, store their data internally, making it difficult to retrieve data from a backup without restoring the entire application. It's even worse when the application stores relevant data outside of its main package. In those cases, the easiest way to regain the needed data may be a full restore. Talk about overkill and a time waster. To avoid this dilemma, you should save the data from your main productivity applications in a second, separate backup. This will also make moving the data to a new Mac an easy 1-2-3 process (copy, move, restore). I'll show you how to back up just the relevant data from Mail, Safari, Address Book, and iCal. I'll add more applications to the list as time goes on... Read more | Time Machine and SuperDuper Make for Easy Backups Backups are one of the most important chores for all Mac users. This is especially true when you have a brand new Mac. Sure, we'd rather relish its newness and explore its capabilities. After all, it's brand new, so what could go wrong? Well, it's a fundamental law of the universe, usually wrongly referenced to some guy named Murphy, But Murphy was just reminiscing about what earlier sages and wits already knew: if anything can go wrong, it will. Before Murphy and his pessimistic buddies descend on your Mac, be sure you have a backup strategy in place... Read more | Guide to Buying An External Hard Drive External hard drives are a popular choice for bulking up a Mac's storage capacity. Externals can be used for many purposes, including data backups, storing large files (such as your iTunes library), or storing the thousands of family photos you've accumulated over the years. It's important to select the right type of external drive, both to ensure that it's compatible with your computer and to ensure that it will meet your needs for the foreseeable future. Buy the largest hard drive you can afford, even if at the moment you can't imagine ever needing that much space. You may be surprised at how quickly it fills up... Read more | Time Machine: Backing Up Your Data Has Never Been So Easy One of the most important and most overlooked tasks that all computer users should perform on a regular basis is a data backup. Unfortunately for too many of us, the first time we think about a backup is when our hard drive fails; and then it's too late. Time Machine, the backup software included with the Mac OS since OS X 10.5, lets you easily create and maintain current backups of all your important data. It also makes recovering lost files a simple, and dare I say fun, process. Before you do anything else with your Mac, set up and use Time Machine... Read more | |
