From Teresa Plowright, your Guide to Family Vacations
Kids love trains and kids love seeing Santa; put the two together and you've got a pretty good Holiday Season memory-maker. Especially when the train is themed to recreate the experience of the beloved book and movie, The Polar Express...

Polar Express Train Rides
The Polar Express is a beautifully illustrated children's book (--and a more recent movie --) about a child's train ride to see Santa at the North Pole. At a number of tourist railroads in the US, families can have a "Polar Express" train ride experience: a real-life ride that re-creates the mood and even some events from the classic book. Kids are encouraged to wear pajamas!

More Christmas Train Rides
The Polar Express isn't the only type of Christmas-themed train to pull out of the station. At many a tourist railroad or miniature railway Santa gets onboard, or perhaps the train takes a trip to find him at the North Pole... Tip: book early, as Christmas train rides sell out!

See Santa at Christmas Grottos in London
I love the idea of seeing Santa in a "grotto": don't imagine, though, that these grottos are anything cave-like. Rather, they're decked out as we North Americans decorate Santa's Workshop, with bright lights and decorated trees, and elves in attendance. Santa's Grottos can be found at a number of London department stores; the legendary Harrods and Selfridges stores are two of the most popular spots.

Christmas Windows
In some cities, decorated windows at major department stores are another great place to see Santa -- and free! Families simply need to stroll along and enjoy the fanciful displays designed to delight a child. New York and London are two great towns for holiday window displays.
