From Robert Silva, your Guide to Home Theater
Welcome to the weekend edition of the About.com Home Theater Newsletter! This weekend the focus is on new audio technology from THX, plus info on other home theater audio items, and a CES wrap-up from our About.com Stereos Guide, Gary Altunian. Also, don't forget to submit your nominations in my Readers' Choice Awards.

THX Steerable Line Array and Slot Speaker Concept Overview
Take two identical small speakers, position them so their cones face, separated by a short distance. Place the assembly in a "brick", cut a slot to match the space that separates the two facing speakers, and you have a Slot Speaker. Now, take one or more Slot Speakers and line them up, each powered by its own compact analog amplifier, and software controlled so that the sound coming from the slots can be beamed in any direction. This is the THX Steerable Line Array. For more details on this interesting sound reproduction concept, check out anOverview of the THX Steerable Line Array and Slot Speaker Concept

The Sound Bar Option
You just purchased that fabulous big-screen flat panel TV, and now that you have it all set up it really does look great, but it sounds terrible. Let's face it, a TV's built-in speaker system usually sounds anemic at best and downright unintelligible at worst. Of course you can add a home theater system, but hooking-up and placing all those speakers just creates more unwanted clutter. The solution for you may just be a Sound Bar. For more details, read my article: Get Better Sound For Your TV Using a Sound Bar.

What Audio Return Channel Is
Although 3D is getting all the buzz these days, another practical feature being introduced to consumers via HDMI ver1.4a is Audio Return Channel, also referred to as ARC. Find out what Audio Return Channel is and how it can make connecting a home theater receiver to a TV easier.
