From Arthur Levine, your Guide to Theme Parks
Many Halloween events at theme parks kick off this weekend, including the 20th version of Universal Orlando's Halloween Horror Nights and the granddaddy of them all, Knott's Berry Farm's Haunt (celebrating its 38th year of scaring the boysenberries out of visitors).

Also, I've got some new ride announcements this week.

Scaredy-Parks: Where to Find Halloween Fun
Virtually every park has some kind of spooky, ooky celebration, ranging from extreme, gross-out, gore-filled haunted mazes to mild, pumpkin-filled trick-or-treat trails. Many parks offer some combination of wild and mild antics. To get a rundown of all the Halloween hoopla, including events, dates, highlights, and more, see my annual Scaredy-Parks guide .

You May Want to Sit Down for This
Imagine climbing a 154-foot coaster tower, soaring down 144 feet at a 45-degree angle, and navigating five inversions--all while standing up. You'll have about seven months to imagine it before you'll be able to ride it. Next spring, Six Flags Great Adventure will open Green Lantern, a standup coaster, at its New Jersey park.

The "new" ride is actually a recycled coaster that dates back to 1997 at Six Flags Kentucky Kingdom where it was known as Chang. Six Flags pulled out of the Kentucky park in 2009 and closed it as part of the debt-laden company's restructuring plan. It left most of the park's other coasters behind, and Kentucky Kingdom may reopen in 2011 under new owners.

It's no coincidence that Green Lantern, a slightly obscure DC Comic hero, will be featured in a major motion picture starring Ryan Reynolds that's set to debut in June 2011. Expect Six Flags to capitalize on the movie's spotlight when it opens its Green Lantern coaster around the same time. Read more about the Green Lantern coaster.

Busch Gardens to Bloom with New Attractions
A spinning drop tower ride will send passengers soaring 246 feet above Busch Gardens Williamsburg next season, but the really big news is that a new launch coaster will be taking the place of the much-missed Big Bad Wolf. The yet-to-be-named coaster, however, won't be launching until the 2012 season. Read more.
