Tips & Tricks

From Tom Nelson, your Guide to Macs
Judging by our inbox, this week a large number of readers had the misfortune to have a CD or DVD get stuck in their Macs. Luckily, this dilemma is usually easy to solve; read on to find out how to deal with this and a few other common problems.

Also this week, we reviewed a new training course for Sandvox, a popular web design application, and found some interesting deals in the Apple refurb store.

Use OS X Boot Manager to Eject a Stuck CD/DVD
CDs and DVDs can become stuck in a Mac's optical drive for many reasons, most of which seem to have to do with the phases of the moon. When this happens to you, don't spend all evening howling about the problem; instead try a nifty trick that usually will eject stuck media.

Use Terminal to Eject a Stuck CD/DVD
Having a CD or DVD stuck in your Mac or an optical drive isn't a fun situation. And while there are a number of ways to force the media to be ejected, most require you to shut down. If that presents a problem, you can use Terminal to force eject the CD or DVD, without shutting down your Mac... Use Terminal to Eject Stuck CDs or DVDs

Apple Steals & Deals
Looking for a fabulous deal on an Apple or related product? Well, so am I! I try to look only at current versions of Macs, but once in a while there will be a great deal on a last-generation product that may be too good to pass up.

If you're in the market for a Mac or Mac-related product, stop by About: Macs main page on Sundays, when the latest Apple Steals & Deals will be posted... Steals & Deals for Sunday, May 9, 2010

Karelia Software, makers of Sandvox, a popular web site design application that received a thumbs-up in my weekly software picks, created a video training system to help users get the most out of Sandvox.

The Sandvox Training Course is available on a DVD as well as on the Karelia web site. This dual availability lets you use the DVD when you're at home, and the web site when traveling... Read more
