From Kyle Phillips, your Guide to Italian Food
One of the drawbacks of having lived for more than 25 years in Italy is that I sometimes forget American holidays -- take Memorial day, for instance. In Italy it's celebrated the day after Ognissanti, on November 2. On the other hand, I do remember how much son R enjoyed the Memorial Day parades the one time we were in the US at that time of year. And wish all who celebrate it a happy, safe holiday.

A Fuoco Vivo
People often associate Italian cooking with pasta, but the country has an equally long tradition of grilling meats, fish and vegetables -- comes from the fact that most homes had hearths in the kitchens until well into the last century, and if you have coals few things are as tasty as grilled foods. or as easy to do.

Picnic Foods and Other Cool Things
The grill may be the centerpiece of a cookout, but the side dishes are (I think) just as important -- insalata di riso, boiled vegetables, and much more. Picnic dishes, in other words, things to be enjoyed cold.

Pasta Salads
yes, pasta salads are a form of picnic food, but the sheer number of pasta salad dishes out there means they deserve to be considered as a separate category. Fish-based, with vegetables, tomatoey... Endless variety!

Quick Italian Recipes
If you're preparing a cookout, and it's a major undertaking, you will likely not have much time to cook other things beforehand. But you still have to eat, and here is a selection of quick recipes of all kinds, some of which you may decide to serve at the cookout too.
