| | Well, Labor Day has come and gone, the kids are back in school, and most seasonal parks have gone into fall weekend-only mode. Which means it's time to start thinking about next season. A Double Order of Wings Dolly Parton may be best known for certain parts of her anatomy, but next year she may be better known for her wings -- or more specifically the new wing coaster at her namesake theme park, Dollywood. The park is billing the thrill machine as the "first of its kind in the U.S.," which is a bit of a stretch. Six Flags Great America will also be launching a wing coaster, X-Flight, at its park next season. While Six Flags got the jump on Dolly's park by revealing its plans earlier (and I've been careful to describe the Six Flags ride as the first announced wing coaster in the U.S., since it had been rumored that Dollywood would be building its version of the thrill machine for next season), the Tennessee park plans to open its ride a few weeks before the Six Flags park. Regardless of the bragging rights, the wing coaster concept looks fascinating, and it appears that both coasters will be great additions to both parks. | | Fly Like an Eagle Dollywood has long been known for its country music shows, its focus on the culture of the Smoky Mountains, and, of course, its celebration of the life and times of its namesake and local-girl-done-good, Dolly Parton. Over the last few years, however, it's also been gaining a reputation for its collection of roller coasters. And in 2012, its reputation will be boosted with the introduction of Wild Eagle, a wing coaster. Learn more about wing coasters and read about Dollywood's Wild Eagle. | Wanna Be a Coaster Wingman (or Wingwoman)? Whooee. Lots of park news this week. King's Dominion will be getting a Windseeker spinning tower ride for 2012. And Six Flags announced a bunch of new rides and shows for next season, including a new launched Superman coaster at Six Flags Discovery Kingdom and a 400-foot (the world's tallest) drop tower ride at Six Flags Magic Mountain. I'll have more news about those and other Six Flags developments later, but let's focus on one of the more unique new rides that will vie for our attention in 2012: X-Flight at Six Flags Great America. It is the first announced wing coaster in North America. What, you may ask, is a wing coaster? Read on. | More about X-Flight | Luck Be a Sadist Tonight When I wrote about Universal Orlando's Halloween Horror Nights last week, the park hadn't revealed all of its sordid details. This week, however, I can report that the scaremeisters who develop what is one of the best (if not the best) Halloween events anywhere appear to have come up with another winner. Perhaps "winner" is a poor choice of a description. To celebrate the 21st annual event, HHN will run with the "21" theme and will present a gambling motif in which the house always wins -- and we're not just talking about extracting money here. The hostess will be Lady Luck, a perverted distillation of the legendary character who will use her seductive ways to lead guests into dangerous wagers.
