From Kyle Phillips, your Guide to Italian Food
If you follow Italian wine, you likely know that a measure to allow the use of red grapes other than Sangiovese (the classic Tuscan red grape) in Rosso di Montalcino, Brunello's little brother, was recently proposed. Since both Brunello and Rosso have always been single varietal wines, the proposal was met with howls of protest from wine writers and wine lovers who feared that if the proposal passed it would open the door to changing how Brunello is made.

Well, the winemakers voted the proposal down. However, as Stefano Tesi points out, the rejection of the proposal wasn't as complete a victory as lovers of traditional wines (me included) would have liked: the vote was secret, thus giving winemakers the chance to express their beliefs, and fully 35% voted for the proposed change.

It's one thing to win with 90% of the vote, and quite another to win with 65%, which means just 15% have to change their minds. The issue will likely resurface at some point soon.
