From Rebecca Franklin, your Guide to French Food

Early fall is a gorgeous time of year and, perfect for me, also coincides with the annual harvest. For my family, that means being taken to the local farmer's market every chance I get. This will either turn out kids who love to cook or, in rebellion, visit only the frozen foods aisle for the next 20 years. We'll see.

For the rest of you who love a good farmer's market, read on. We have a tour of regional farmer's markets for all the travelers (or armchair travelers) out there and a great harvest-fresh, gingered pear preserves recipe to savor at home.

Regional Farmer's Markets

Traveling to different areas of France means expecting unique, regional differences in traditions, culture, and climate. The same holds true for the gastronomy.

Visiting the open air markets of France is a lavish fantasy come alive for a gourmand. Poking through stalls, one will discover gorgeous, fresh-picked produce sold by vendors eager to help and tell their tales. More alluring, still, are the locally prepared and handcrafted items. While many nationally beloved dishes feature only subtle differences, if any, from one region to another, local food is the true start of the show. Look for specialties from smokehouses, creameries, and patisseries. Unearthing local epicurean gems, such as a rare blend of preserves to take home, is all part of the fun. No passport? No problem. Visit the regional food and recipes section for more inspiration on creating a culinary tour of France in your home kitchen.

No Passport Pear Preserves
Above, I mentioned that if you were not planning on packing up a suitcase to tour France, no problem; we have recipes. This 5-star reviewed gingered pear preserves recipe has been quietly gaining popularity on About French Food, due to the fall harvest. Pears and bright, lemony-spicy ginger are a perfect flavor match. This special recipe uses two types of ginger - fresh and crystallized - to add complexity and depth to the finished product. Jars of this mildly spiced preserve are a perfect gift during cold winter holidays and wonderful for cool autumn breakfasts.
