Best of Europe

From James Martin, your Guide to Europe Travel
Ah, we've started to get some rain again in Tuscany; perhaps the intense heat of summer will take a few days off. Meanwhile, you can dream of beaches, even in Berlin, of all places, or of ancient temples like those in Sicily. If the island of Sicily is too big, why not consider little Texel island in the Netherlands?

Berlin Beaches
Yes, Berlin is "landlocked" as they say. But city river and lake beaches are all the rage, and here are four of the local favorites for taking a dip.

The Temples of Agrigento, Sicily
Agrigento is the place to see temples in Europe. Plan to be there in spring, when the weather is nice and the wildflowers are in bloom and you'll be entranced by the Valley of the Temples.

Cologne, Germany
See the amazing Gothic cathedral, then hit the archaeological museum in the same square. If you're thirsty, try Cologne's unique beer, Kölcsh.

Texel Island, the Netherlands
If you don't think of Berlin as a beach city, then you probably don't think of Holland as an island paradise. Yet there is a string of islands on the Netherlands map, and the biggest and most accessible one has lots to do for the tourist. Check it out.
