From Donna Pilato, your Guide to Entertaining
It's very quiet around here now that the girls have returned to school. I know this quiet won't last for long and soon I'll be busy planning birthday and Halloween parties. But for this brief time I'm going to enjoy the calm before the chaos. Have an Entertaining week!

Whip Up a Few Tomato Appetizers
The tomatoes have been very good this summer - a payback for a very hot season. I'm still finding plenty of fresh local tomatoes in my markets, and I plan to use as many of them as possible while I still can. Tomato appetizers are among some of the easiest and most popular ways to showcase tomatoes at their freshest, before we're stuck with the hot house variety for another eight months.

Remember to Make a Back-Up Plan When You Plan an Outdoor Party
Our local news channels obsessed all last week about the hurricane threat on the east coast. Luckily it turned out not to be as destructive as they predicted. However, it serves as a good reminder to have back-up plans if you're going to host a party outside during the remainder of the outdoor entertaining season.

You CAN Entertain in a Small Space
Once upon a time, I shared a Manhattan apartment with three other women who were also living on the meager salaries from their first "real" jobs after college. Our place was small, but that didn't stop us from throwing some pretty fabulous parties. In fact, I met my husband (my roommate's brother) at our New Year's Eve blowout one year. Which goes to prove that it's definitely possible, with just a few simple tricks, to entertain in a small space.

Celebrate the New Year at Rosh Hashanah
The girls have gone back to school. This always creates the feeling of a new year for me. Coincidentally, Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year celebration begins after sundown tonight.
