From Donna Pilato, your Guide to Entertaining
Now that my mourning period for the passing of summer is over, I'm ready to enjoy the fall. Apples, figs, Oktoberfest, cool mornings and sunny afternoons are all reasons to celebrate the change of seasons. Have an Entertaining week!

Host an Oktoberfest Party
I've developed such a finely tuned appetite that without even looking at the calendar I can tell which holiday is approaching. For example, I've been longing for pork and sausage dishes, potatoes, apple desserts, and beer. I checked the calendar and, of course, it's time to plan my Oktoberfest party since the celebration begins next Sunday!

A Sing Along Ice Breaker Game
I've led and participated in many ice breaker games over the years. I can't think of one occasion where the ice breaker didn't succeed at warming up the party. One reader of this site was so inspired as she read through different ice breakers, she made up one on the spot. It sounds fun to me, and I believe this sing along ice breaker would make your guests feel young while they laughed their way through the song.

Why Do You Entertain?
I found out yesterday that we'll be hosting out of town visitors this evening. They were generous enough to offer to take us out to dinner tonight, but I'm going to entertain them and do the cooking myself. There are many reasons you might want to entertain and not take the easy way out, despite the extra effort. I offer you my Top Reasons to Entertain, and then I invite you to share your reasons for entertaining too.

Fig Heaven
Yesterday, I was the proud recipient of freshly picked figs from my father's fig tree. They were perfectly fresh, plump, and ripe. My mom, not to be outdone by my father's gift, turned a small portion of the figs into these delicious appetizers with goat cheese, basil, and a drizzle of olive oil. Now it's up to me to decide what to do with the rest of the bounty. This has inspired me to pull out my copy of "Fig Heaven" which is filled with recipes worthy of this late season fruit. I'll be spending some time this weekend deciding just how to make the most of this gift from the garden. You can read more about "Fig Heaven" in this review.
