For those living in eastern Liguria and the Tuscan Province of Massa Carrara: What was several hours of steady rain for us in central Tuscany was a cataclysm for them, with -- in some areas -- more than a foot, 25 cm (and in some places considerably more) of rain in just a few hours. Walls of water engulfed the valleys and the towns in them, and though only a few people lost their lives destruction was widespread and in many places, especially Vernazza dn Monterossa in the Cinque Terre, and Aulla in the Val di Luni little is left. It's a mess.
