Fun Places To Go

From Teresa Plowright, your Guide to Family Vacations
Summer's high season for being awed by Nature: if you've got time for a getaway in August, why not get out in the Great Outdoors?

Yellowstone National Park- Top Things To Do
There's so darn much to do in this Park's 2.2M acres... Everyone, of course, wants to see Old Faithful-- and the famous geyser obliges every 90 minutes (or so). But don't miss other amazing "geothermal features" - hot springs, travertine terraces, burbling mudholes... And the chance to see bison, elk, moose, bear; the scenic Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone; historic hotels...

River Rafting Trips
Even a gentle float down a river is great: the passing scenery looks completely different from this view (-canyon walls are especially impressive.) But adding some white-water hugely improves the fun. Pick the right Class of river rafting, and even young kids can enjoy the ride.

Summer Fun at Cool Mountain Ski Resorts
Ski mountains are getting better and better at drawing visitors during summer. Hiking, biking, horse-riding, rock-climbing, are just the start. Lots of places add on man-made fun: like, say, a 2400-foot alpine slide.

Mammoth Mountain, CA, in Summer
This very high mountain, 260 miles east of San Francisco, is a popular ski destination in winter, and also awesome in summer-time: take a gondola up to the 11,053 foot summit, to amazing views at the Top of the Sierra Interpretive Center.
