From Jolinda Hackett, your Guide to Vegetarian Food
Even if you aren't baking for the kids, homemade granola bars or breakfast bars are a healthier choice than sugary cereal, and, of course, they're perfect for eating on the run, if you've got to go! I admit, when I make cereal bars, I munch on them as a snack, rather than eating them for breakfast. Nothing wrong with that, though!

Cranberry Date Bars
Store-bought cereal bars often have unhealthy additives, so better to make your own healthy homemade cereal bars. These whole wheat and oatmeal breakfast bars are flavored with cranberries and dates. If you like packaged cereal bars, these are even better!

Oatmeal and Cereal Bars
Use any kind of small cereal you like to make this recipe, add some oatmeal, and pick your favorite nut butter, and viola - you've got an easy vegan oatmeal and cereal bar, similar to a store-bought granola bar, but healthier! There's plenty of maple syrup in this recipe, so while it's free of refined sugar, it's still quite sweet.

Sugar-free Whole Wheat Energy Bars
These whole wheat bars are sweetened with honey, applesauce and dried fruit, rather than refined sugar, so they're great if you're trying to reduce your family's sweet tooth. They're packed with healthy high-fiber wheat germ and bran cereal.

Rice Crispies, granola bars and more...
Here's a few more to try:
  • Chocolate peanut butter rice crispies Most rice crispy squares or rice crispy treats recipes call for marshmallows, which contain gelatin, so are not strictly vegetarian and are certainly not vegan. This rice crispy squares recipe uses corn syrup and peanut butter instead.
  • Cornflake cereal bars Another incredibly easy way to make cereal bars, this one using corn syrup and cornflake cereal.
  • Peanut butter granola bars Homemade granola bars may be easier to make than you think. This easy vegan recipe has just six ingredients.
