From Linda Garrison, your Guide to Cruises
It may be summer here in the USA, but it's not too early to plan a winter cruise to South America. The ports of call are fascinating, and the weather is much better than in the northern hemisphere.

Buzios, Brazil - Beaches and Brigette Bardot
Buzios is a typical charming beach town, filled with shops, bars, and restaurants. Buzios is in Brazil, but you could just as easily be in the Caribbean or Mediterranean Seas. Buzios was "discovered" by Brigitte Bardot and her Brazilian boyfriend in the 1960s, and since then it has been considered Brazil's St. Tropez.

Montevideo - Capital of Uruguay
Montevideo can be found across the Rio de la Plata from Buenos Aires. Cruise ships sailing from Buenos Aires north to Rio or south to the Falklands or around Cape Horn to Valparaiso (Santiago) often include Montevideo as a port of call on their itineraries.

Devil's Island - Famous French Political Prison
Devil's Island is one of three Salvation Islands used by the French as penal colonies from the mid-1800s until after World War II. Devil's Island may be an unusual port of call, but this old French penal colony is fascinating and was well-depicted in the Steve McQueen movie, "Papillon".

The Falkland Islands or Las Malvinas
The Falkland Islands (Islas Malvinas) of the South Atlantic Ocean are often included on South American cruise itineraries or cruises to Antarctica. Cruise ships like to include the Falklands as a port of call because of their interesting history, geology, ecology, and flora and fauna.
