From Linda Garrison, your Guide to Cruises
This newsletter may be dedicated to cruise travel, but trains have been used for some of my most memorable shore excursions. Let's ride some trains!

El Chepe to Copper Canyon, Mexico
The Chihuahua to the Pacific Train (also called El Chepe) is an engineering marvel that traverses 39 bridges and 87 tunnels on its 400-mile route linking Chihuahua, Mexico with the Gulf of California. The route is one of the most scenic and diverse in the world, going from sea level to over 7000 feet above sea level at Copper Canyon.

Alaska Railroad Grandview Train - Anchorage to Seward
If your Alaska cruise embarks or disembarks in Seward, you will need a transfer to or from Anchorage, which is 127 miles away. Cruise passengers can choose either a 3-hour bus transfer or a 4.5-hour ride on the Grandview Train of the Alaska Railroad. The train runs directly between the Anchorage airport and the cruise pier in Seward.

Kuranda Scenic Railway in Australia
The Kuranda Scenic Railway near Cairns, Australia dates back to the 19th century. This historic railroad follows the scenic Barron River Gorge, and the train passes through numerous tunnels as it winds its way up the Great Dividing Range.

Riding the Flam Railway
Flam, Norway is often included as a cruise ship port of call because of the Flam Railway, which rises almost 3000 feet straight up the mountains to Myrdal, where it links to the Bergen-Oslo Railway. The train ride from Flam to Myrdal takes about an hour, and includes 20 tunnels and panoramic views of the Norwegian mountains.
