From Tom Nelson, your Guide to Macs
This week, I'm sorry to report the passing of my favorite mouse. No, not a cute little guy with whiskers, but a utilitarian pointing device for my Mac. Seems its scroll wheel died of old age, or maybe too much use. I performed emergency surgery to try to repair the mouse, but I'll spare you the details. Let's just say he never made it off the table, and I'm left with a collection of rodent remnants.

To help ensure you don't start a rodent remnant collection of your own, this week's newsletter features the latest installment to our guide to keeping your Mac in tip-top shape.

You'll also learn why you may want to use Apple's combo update instead of Software Update, at least when it comes to installing OS X point releases on your Mac.

Keeping Your Mac Clean and Trouble-Free
Keeping your Mac's mouse, keyboard, and monitor clean is a basic task all Mac users should undertake. For some, a good cleaning only needs to be done a few times a year. I scoured all of the sites in the Computing and Technology channel at About.com for computer cleaning tips. So here they are, all gathered together in one handy place... Read more

Enlarging the Mouse Pointer
With both larger and high-resolution displays becoming the norm, you may have noticed your mouse pointer is getting smaller. There is, however, a way to make the mouse pointer larger, so it's easier to spot... Read more

Use OS X Combo Updates to Correct Installation Problems
Apple routinely releases updates to OS X that are available through the Software Update process. These software updates, available from the Apple menu, usually provide the simplest method for ensuring your Mac's operating system is kept up to date. They can also cause problems, particularly if your Mac should freeze, lose power, or otherwise prevent the update from completing. When this occurs, you end up with a corrupt system update, which may manifest itself as simple instability: occasional freezes or the system or applications locking up. In the worst-case scenario, you may have problems booting, forcing you to consider reinstalling the OS... Read more

All That's Left of My Mouse Is Rodent Remnants
A few weeks back, I asked you to contribute reviews about the mice you use with your Macs. Well, I'm going to be making personal use of those reviews as I hunt for a new mouse to replace the one that started leaving little mouse droppings around my desk, then finally erupted in a cloud of mouse parts as I was trying to fix the little bugger.

So, if you have the time, help me pick a new mouse for my Mac by adding to our list of favored rodents... Read more
