From Kyle Phillips, your Guide to Italian Food
I just got back from a couple of days at Lazise, a town on the eastern shore of Lake Garda, where I was one of the journalists invited to taste the newly presented 2009 vintage. Bardolino has two wines, a rosee that is fresh and fruity, and a red that is made from the same grapes as Valpolicella's wines, but is much lighter and again the sort of thing one sets out and finishes with a quick and easy meal. The 2009 vintage was more difficult than some, with high temperatures in July that affected the grapes, resulting in decidedly green tannins that make for fairly aggressive wines. Not the sort of thing you'd want to drink by the glass far from the table, but they'll be quite nice with grilled emats and other cookout fixings, and also good with another summer standby, fried meats and vegetables. I'll be posting my impressions shortly, but wanted to say that it was a very nice presentation.
