Birthdays

From Donna Pilato, your Guide to Entertaining
Anyone following this site for a few years knows that July is always birthday month. In fact, it's my favorite month for birthdays. After all, there aren't many months where ice cream cakes are as perfect as they seem in July. Have an Entertaining week!

Today is Somebody's Birthday
Birthdays are one of the personal occasions that aren't celebrated with fireworks and general fanfare (unless you were born on the 4th). But when you stop to think about it, every day is cause for celebration since it's somebody's birthday. Do you know someone with an upcoming birthday? Here's how to plan a surprise party for that someone special.

Celebrate July with Cherries and Pie
Red, white and blue may be the patriotic colors of the July 4th holiday here in the U.S.A. However, red seems to steal the show with cherry pies and strawberry shortcakes helping to create a festive table. Both of these fruits are in season now and are begging to be used in delicious desserts...

What to Do with Zucchini?
They seem to have arrived earlier than usual this year. Those incredible gifts from my father's garden that, if you dare to turn your back on them, will grow as long as your arm. My kids kind of cringe when they see them in our refrigerator, so I've come to depend on "The Classic Zucchini Cookbook" to find ways to turn them into something that's family and company friendly. Zapple Pie has become a favorite and I'm happy to report that the Beef and Zucchini Casserole went over well too.

Pack an Easy Picnic Dinner
Yesterday we went with friends to an all day music and fireworks festival to celebrate the 4th of July. We know that there's always food available at these festivals, but the lines are usually so long at the concessions and the expense is beyond the quality of the food. That's why we made sure to bring along a cooler with an easy picnic dinner. That way we could enjoy the music and the scenery, without getting stressed by waiting in a line.
