From Tom Nelson, your Guide to Macs
Some people enjoy the experience of holiday shopping, reveling in the decorations and crowds. Others are glad they can shop from home for many of their needs, and not have to brave the holiday traffic. Still others look up in confusion as they finish a game of Portal 2, not believing that it's really almost Christmas.

No matter where you fall on the scale of holiday anticipation, you probably still have one or more gifts to find for that hard-to-please friend or family member. If so, our 2011 Mac Gift Guide may be just what you need.

Once the shopping is done, it's time to focus on decorating for the holidays. Once again, it's About: Macs to the rescue. It's amazing the things you can create with your Mac, a bit of time, and some material gathered from around the web.

Restore Smart Searches to OS X Lion's Finder Sidebar
Apple attempted to replace the sidebar's Search For section with a single entry in the Favorites section called All My Files. Apple wants us to use the All My Files entry so much that it made All My Files the default view when you open a new Finder window. From what I have seen and heard, changing the default view seems to be one of the first changes most Mac Lion users are making to the Finder, because they prefer the Finder to open on their desktop, home directory, or documents folder.

That means the old Search For section is sorely missed. It's easy to restore, however... Read more
