Best of Europe

From James Martin, your Guide to Europe Travel
Lots of new stuff this week, as we recover from our jet lag and start to put together a new portfolio of good places to visit. Our experiences weren't entirely rosy in traveling from Zurich to northern Tuscany, which leads us to issue a warning about Vignette in Austria (and Switzerland). Don't know what they are? See below and save yourself some grief if you're planning to use the fast roads in either of those countries.

Austrian Tourist Trap | Caught Without a Vignette
In driving from the Swiss side of Lake Constance towards Herrenchiemsee Palace in Germany we inadvertently drove through a wedge of Austria, where we got on an on-ramp to what we thought was a German Autobahn--but the on-ramp was in Austria, and shortly after we found ourselves in a parking lot patrolled by sharp-eyed police, a trap for folks who didn't have a vignette displayed on their windshield. Don't make this mistake. It cost us €120 to drive 200 meters. That's a lot.

Herrenchiemsee Palace Illustrated Guide
Yes, I know you read about King Ludwig II's "other" unfinished castle in Bavaria last week, but since then we've posted a pictorial guide that is a suggested itinerary, from our recommended place to stay (a 15th century castle) to a fabulous place to eat, to the best route to take in getting to the castle (on the world's last regularly running steam train).

Free in London
Yes, the dollar just can't seem to pull itself out of its doldrums. So, if you're on a budget, you might plan to visit places where lots of things are free--and certainly if you're a museum nut, London is the place to go!
