A few girlfriends and I got together recently for an early holiday cookfest. This year's theme was international cultures, and we had a blast fiddling around with the little-known traditions of our ancestors.

I was basically required, under penalty of getting kicked out of the cookie swap, to divulge an incredible French sweet that isn't available in every foodie catalogue. So I did what any baking enthusiast would do: I pulled out a bag of day-old, pulverized spice cake crumbs and stirred them into some spectacularly rich vanilla ice cream. The result? Traditional gingerbread ice cream, the original winter ice cream flavor, straight from Burgundy.
