I got to thinking about all the history available to the traveler in the form of monumental architecture, and decided to write about my favorite lesser-known palaces and castles to visit in Europe. It was a fun exercise, and I'm sure I'll be adding to the article as I think of more places.

This list is far from "complete"--as if it ever could be complete. Still, these are some of my favorite royal palaces and medieval castles. If you're planning a trip--especially if you're taking kids along--you might want to look it over carefully.
