| | September is a time when Apple is usually getting ready to unveil many of its consumer electronic devices, such as iPods and iPhones. This year, it appears that any upcoming announcements will occur later in the month than usual. While we wait for whatever may be coming our way, I turned my attention to Parallels Desktop 7, the newest version of the popular virtualization application for the Mac. I also looked at one of Lion's new Finder features: 'Arrange By.' Also this week, Apple continues to roll out iPad 2 models to the Apple refurb store. You can find more information in the Mac News & Events section of this newsletter. | | Parallels Desktop 7 for Mac Review Parallels, manufacturer of one of the leading virtualization applications for the Mac, just released a new version: Parallels Desktop 7 for Mac. I quickly got my greedy little hands on a copy and put it through its paces. I was quite delighted with the new version, and noticed a good increase in performance, particularly in 3D graphics, which I tested by playing a few Windows games. Overall, Parallels Desktop 7 provides a robust environment for running Windows, Linux, UNIX, and even OS X Lion in a virtual environment. You can run these guest OSes right alongside the Mac OS. I plan to try a few more games under Parallels, but I guess I should finish this newsletter first... Read the review | OS X Lion Finder - Understanding the New 'Arrange By' Option If you use Lion, you may have noticed that the Finder has a few new features. One of them, the 'Arrange By' option, gives you a bit more control over how items display in Finder windows. Arrange By is intended to be a helpful companion to the Finder's view options, and in some cases, it is. But after trying out the various Arrange By options, i turned it off and went back to using just the normal Finder views. But that's just me, and I've been called an old fuddy duddy more than once. Read more | How to Remove Safari Plug-ins Safari, Apple's web browser, is one of the best browsers for the Mac. Out of the box, Safari is fast, and can handle just about any type of web site. As is true of most browsers (and some other software programs), you can expand Safari's feature set by adding modules called plug-ins. Plug-ins are small programs that can add functionality that a software program lacks; they can also enhance a program's existing capabilities. Plug-ins can have a down side. Poorly written plug-ins can slow down Safari's web-rendering performance. Plug-ins can compete with other plug-ins, causing stability issues, or replace a program's built-in functionality with methods that aren't as, well, functional.
