Tips & Tricks

From Tom Nelson, your Guide to Macs
Readers have been asking me about gestures lately. I grin, bite my tongue, and think "Gestures. Boy, do I know some gestures." After quickly realizing that's not quite what they meant, I describe how gestures will help anyone who uses OS X Lion.

And that's the overall theme for this week's newsletter: getting ready for Lion. If you don't plan to upgrade to Lion, don't worry; there are plenty of other goodies in the newsletter. And although the summer will see a lot of new Lion content here at About: Macs, we won't abandon any of the previous OSes we cover.

Using Multi-Touch Gestures With OS X Lion
I've received a few questions recently about using multi-touch gestures to access many of OS X Lion's new features. Though it's phrased in various ways, the basic question is:

"Do I have to have a trackpad to use Lion?"

The answer is a resounding "No." Lion will work just fine with standard pointing devices, such as your old non-multi-touch mouse. That being said, there will be some advantages to using a multi-touch trackpad or Magic Mouse with Lion... Read more

Get Ready for Mac OS X Lion
We're getting ready for OS X Lion by building our collection of Lion-related information. We'll be publishing new Lion content every week, and sometimes more often than that, so you'll have the latest information available at your fingertips.

You are, of course, welcome to browse through the About: Macs web site; in fact, I certainly hope you do. But I'll also be updating this article with each new story about Lion. New this week is information about using pointing devices, the new Mission Control feature, how to create a bootable copy of Lion, and more... Read more

Reader Reviews: Your Favorite Mouse or Pointing Device
Mac users have a bit of a love/hate relationship with Apple mice. You either love the included mouse, or you confine it to the dark recesses of a closet and hope it won't figure out a way to reproduce.

I really like the Magic Mouse, but I've tossed all previous Mac mice into that dark closet.

Let us know what mouse or pointing device you use with your Mac, and what you like and don't like about it. There are always readers trying to decide on a replacement mouse, so telling them what you like or don't like about your mouse can be helpful... Read more

How to Perform a Clean Install of Snow Leopard
If you're considering moving to OS X Lion, one of the requirements is Snow Leopard; Snow Leopard must be installed on your Mac in order to install Lion. This isn't because Lion is an upgrade version, but because it's only sold through the Mac App Store. The minimum OS requirement to use the Mac App Store is Snow Leopard. If you're using an earlier version of OS X, and your hardware supports running Snow Leopard, you may want to take the plunge and upgrade now, while the install DVDs are still readily available from Apple. Snow Leopard is just $29, and with these instructions, you can install Snow Leopard on any supported Mac, regardless of the OS you're currently using... Read more
