Tips & Tricks

From Tom Nelson, your Guide to Macs
Did you know that when the Mac was first revealed in 1984, it introduced itself by saying, "Hello, I'm Macintosh. It sure is great to get out of that bag."

What's remarkable is that the voice used to say hello is still installed in every Mac. Actually, the Mac has quite a few voices available for speech. If you would like to recreate the original Mac introduction, take a look at the Talking Terminal tip and use the Fred voice.

By combining Terminal and Automator, you can create a menu item to show or hide hidden files and folders on your Mac... Read more

"Why isn't there a way to defragment a hard drive built into a Mac?" they say. The answer is, defragmenting is so last year... Read more

Add, Delete, and Resize Existing Volumes With Disk Utility
One of Disk Utility's neat little tricks is that you can use it to add, delete, or resize existing volumes on a hard drive, all without having to erase or lose any data.

With OS X Lion about to make its appearance, the ability to change partition sizes or create new ones without deleting data could prove to be very handy. But remember this time-honored rule: Even though Disk Utility says you won't lose data by resizing or adding new volumes, BACK UP FIRST... Read more
