According to a 1999 study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, choosing soup before a meal will naturally help you consume fewer calories overall, and can lead to dramatic weight loss, and more importantly, soup can help in keeping it off. Choose broth-based soups (rather than creamy soups) to help with weight loss. Here's a few nourishing fat-free soups to try.

Spicy Mango Ginger Soup
It's not your average soup, but give it a chance, and it just might be your new favorite. Here's what one reviewer said: "My soup had a lovely peach color as I used red onion. Had some left-over fresh coconut milk so substituted it in for half of the water, delicious satisfying soup! My friend layered her portion over cooked quinoa and felt she had a complete meal."

Indian Cabbage Soup
One reader who reviewed this fat-free soup recipe gave it 5 out of 5 stars, but suggested adding some barley for extra texture and fiber.

Curried Pea and Potato Soup
A healthy fat-free and vegan recipe for curried split pea and potato soup with carrots and celery. No fat is added (or needed!) in this split pea soup recipe, as there are lots of spices for flavor, including curry, oregano and garlic.

Kale and Sweet Potato Soup
This fat-free soup is made from kale, sweet potatoes, lemon, garlic, cayenne, salt and pepper.
