The Memorial Day holiday in the U.S. is observed on the last Monday in May, and though its purpose -- to remember those who've died in war-- is a serious one, the long weekend is also the unofficial kick-off for summer-time. (Canada has a similar start-of-summer with Victoria Day weekend, a week earlier.) A number of cities have special Memorial Day events, including parades and wreath-laying.
