From Betsy Malloy, your Guide to California Travel
We've been smitten by the Mother Road Route 66 for decades, seduced by the bright neons and imitative structures, ready to stop at the smallest roadside attraction, the crazier the better.

Route 66 in California
We've been smitten by the Mother Road for decades, seduced by the bright neons and imitative structures like the wigwam motel. The last stretch of Route 66 was decommissioned by the Federal government in 1985, but it lives on... see what we found on Route 66 in California.

Favorite Apps: Roadside America
We've got an unexplainable attraction to tourism kitsch. Tell us about a giant orange that doubled as a refreshment stand, a water tower that's painted like a teapot or a giant fire helmet beside the road and we're there. We've long been a fan of Roadside America as the source of offbeat tourist attraction info, and just in case your affliction is as bad as ours, it's easy to get a fix any time by using their app.

Photo of the Week: Wigwam Motel
Concrete wigwams, decked out as a tourist motel - how cute is that? This still-functioning motel in San Bernardino is one of the few great bits of Route 66 architecture remaining in California and one of two left along the Route 66 of yesteryear. check out this cool Route 66 remnant, too.

Route 66 History
U. S. Route 66 is the highway that wouldn't die. The last stretch of Route 66 was decommissioned by the Federal government in 1985, but over twenty years later, Route 66 lives on.
