Tips & Tricks

From Tom Nelson, your Guide to Macs
I use iTunes quite a bit, mostly for listening to music here in the office, or loading up playlists for my iPod shuffle. The shuffle gets quite a workout when I'm doing yard work, using the tractor to mow the lawn, or clearing snow from around the house. (I've used the shuffle for that last task a lot more often this winter than I'd like!) I tend to like different playlists, depending on the activity, so using iTunes to create Smart Playlists is a necessity. If you haven't used the Smart Playlist feature yet, take a moment to read our guide and learn how easy they are to create and manage.

This week we also have a new tip for fixing a Magic Mouse tracking problem.

Fix a Magic Mouse Tracking Problem
The Magic Mouse is by far the best Apple mouse to date. But even though Apple is known for spending a great deal of time on design, ergonomics, and quality assurance, the Magic Mouse has a few quirks that some people (including me) have noticed.

I've already provided details about how to fix the Magic Mouse disconnects that have been plaguing some users. After the disconnect issue, the next most common complaint is a Magic Mouse that suddenly stops tracking or becomes jerky... Read more

How to Create a Complex Smart Playlist in iTunes 10
It's easy to set up playlists in iTunes, although it can be time consuming, particularly if you have a large library of songs (and who doesn't?).

You can use the handy Smart Playlist feature to make iTunes do most of the work for you. Don't let the word 'complex' scare you. In just a few minutes, with just a few clicks, you can create Smart Playlists based on one or two criteria, a long list of criteria, or anything in-between... Read more

Use Disk Utility to Create a RAID 1 (Mirror) Array
RAID 1, also known as a mirror or mirroring, is one of the many RAID levels supported by OS X and Disk Utility. RAID 1 lets you assign two or more disks as a mirrored set. Once you create the mirrored set, your Mac will see it as a single disk drive. But when your Mac writes data to the mirrored set, it will duplicate the data across all members of the set. This ensures that your data is protected against loss if any hard drive in the RAID 1 set fails. In fact, as long as any single member of the set remains functional, your Mac will continue to operate normally, with complete access to your data... Read more

Fix an SPOD - How to Fix a Spinning Pinwheel of Death
Once in a while, for no apparent reason, you may encounter the SPOD (Spinning Pinwheel of Death). You know, that multicolored pinwheel mouse pointer that signifies a temporary delay while your Mac tries to figure something out. In this case, your Mac is trying to think but nothing happens, so the pinwheel keeps spinning, and spinning, and spinning.

If you have encountered the SPOD, I may have a solution that will prevent the colorful pinwheel from returning to your screen... Read more
