From Tom Nelson, your Guide to Macs
We're halfway through the Readers' Choice Awards 2011, and the seven Mac categories are seeing their share of voting action. There are both early leaders and races that are too close to call, but there's one thing I know for sure: The winners are up to you. So lend a hand and get out the vote. Don't forget that you can vote once a day, if you want to stuff the ballot box for your favorites.

Also this week, we added a new project to the DIY section of About: Macs. It's all about how to create your own iChat smileys from scratch. Check the newsletter for additional timely tips.

iChat Smiley: Create Your Own iChat Smiley
Last week we showed you how to modify an existing iChat smiley. During the week, I received a lot of questions about how to create a new smiley without modifying an existing one. So, for those of you who love to customize your systems, here are instructions for creating an iChat smiley from scratch, and sharing the new smiley with others... Read more

Calibrate a MacBook, MacBook Pro, or MacBook Air Battery
New or old, all of the MacBook, MacBook Pro, and MacBook Air portables use a battery that has an internal processor designed to maximize battery performance. In order to make accurate predictions about remaining battery charge, the battery and its processor need to undergo a calibration routine. The calibration routine helps the processor gauge the battery's current performance and make accurate predictions about the remaining battery charge... Read more

Back Up or Move Your Safari Bookmarks to a New Mac
Safari, Apple's popular web browser, has a lot going for it. It's easy to use, fast, and versatile, and it adheres to web standards. It does, however, have one slightly annoying feature, or should I say it lacks a feature: a convenient way to import and export bookmarks.

Yes, there are 'Import Bookmarks' and 'Export Bookmarks' options in the Safari File menu. But if you've ever used them, you probably didn't get what you expected. If you want to back up and restore your Safari bookmarks without the import/export and sorting hassle, you can. Likewise, this method of directly manipulating Safari's bookmark file will allow you to move your Safari bookmarks to a new Mac, or take your Safari bookmarks with you wherever you go and use them on an available Mac... Readers' Choice Awards 2011: Current Leaders
We're halfway through the Readers' Choice Awards 2011 and it's interesting to see who the current leaders are in each of the seven Mac categories. There is still plenty of time for the voting tallies to change, and historically, the last two weeks of the voting are when big pushes occur for many of the candidates.

So, get your vote in now, and make sure your favorites are among the winners this year.
