From Teresa Plowright, your Guide to Family Vacations
Hurricane Earl is making news this week: serious news, in the Outer Banks area of North Carolina, where Earl is expected to arrive Friday morning. Hopefully the storm will pass without damage. But it will still continue up the coast...

Hurricane Earl - Labor Day Weekend
Legions of families in the northeast US look forward to a last summer weekend on the beach, over Labor Day. This year, they may be facing bad weather and dangerous waters, as Earl continues north, past Cape Cod and onward to Nova Scotia. Hurricane-force winds may even hit Cape Cod.

More about Cape Cod...
Optimists hope that Earl will move through quickly, so that visitors can still enjoy a last hurrah for summer at the beach. Our Guide for New England Travel talks about what makes Cape Cod and Nantucket and Martha's Vineyard so special, and has all the practical info -- where to stay, ferries, temperatures -- as well.

Cape Breton, Nova Scotia
Hurricane Earl is expected to continue north past New England into Canada, and here's another great east coast place for a family holiday: Cape Breton island, in Nova Scotia, with beautiful scenery, whale watching, celtic heritage, and a huge musical tradition -- be sure to take in a ceilidh ("kaylee"), a good-times family-style musical get-together.

More about Outer Banks, North Carolina
Meanwhile, if your curiosity's been peaked by reading headlines about the Outer Banks, and you want to plan for another year: this popular destination has beautiful beaches, and more than one has been picked by Dr. Beach in his annual list of top ten beaches. Swimming, crabbing, sailing, fishing, windsurfing, quaint towns and inns and light-houses, Wright Brothers Memorial... These are some of the highlights of the area.
