Family Vacations

Family Vacation Ideas

Resorts

Fun Places To Go

From Teresa Plowright, your Guide to Family Vacations
Those of us on a school-week schedule may already be looking forward to a long weekend break, coming up the second Monday in October thanks to Columbus Day in the US (and Thanksgiving in Canada).

Columbus Day Weekend Getaways
Early October is a wonderful time for "leaf-peeping" and other outdoorsy fall getaways -- check out these and other ideas for the long weekend. And if you can swing a longer getaway, you might be tempted by (--you won't guess this one--) Chocolate Week in London.

Chocolate in London
Chocolate Week is an inspired idea, but chocoholics may be glad to know that London has chocolate classes, chocolate afternoon tea, chocolate tours and more, year-round. Our Guide for London Travel picks the best spots.

Disney World Free Dining Plan
Meanwhile, on this side of "the pond", Disney World is reprising a popular deal: the Free Dining Plan option is being offered again, from October 2010 all the way through September 2011 (on select dates). Guests can buy a package that includes accommodation at a Disney World Resort plus theme park tix, and get a Disney Dining Plan thrown in for free.

Disney World Resorts
About those Disney World resorts: they come in several types -- Luxury, Moderate, Value -- and all include the same nice perks for guests. Such as 'Extra Magic Hours': each day, one of the theme parks opens one hour early and/or stays open 3 hours late, exclusively for guests at Disney Resorts. And 'Disney's Magical Express': a complimentary bus service to and from the airport....

About Today: Top 10 Cleaning Myths

If you can't see this email, click here

About.com

From Jen Hubley, your About Today Editor
I've become tidier in my old age, but regular readers of this newsletter know that this doesn't mean much. I mean, my clothes organizational system used to be to have a dirty pile and a clean pile ... and then sort of a trail in between.

Top 10 Cleaning Myths
So clearly, there was room for improvement, and still is. For example, until I read this piece, I had no idea that bleach wasn't the ideal cleanser for every occasion.

7 Vacuum Cleaner Mistakes
Or: Why Jen should stop vacuuming up pennies instead of bending allll the way over to pick them up.

5 Stainless Steel Mistakes
The first time I had stainless steel appliances I thought, oh, hooray! "Stainless!" I will surely never have to clean them again. It turns out, not so much. They should call it "smudgeful steel."

10 Tile Cleaning Mistakes
Tile looks so sturdy, but even small things - a misplaced doormat, or a too-wet mop - can damage tile floors over time.

Classic French Dishes

From Rebecca Franklin, your Guide to French Food

Celeriac Parsnip Soup Recipe

This celeriac parsnip soup recipe is a wholesome blend of delicately flavored, deliciously scented celeriac and subtly sweet parsnips. The vegetables are roasted until caramelized to enhance their natural goodness and the mixture is blended until silky smooth for an elegant presentation. Kick up the flavor with a drizzle of garlicky pistou for the garnish... Read more.

Herbed White Bean Soup Recipe

White beans sometimes carry the connotation of being boring. I prefer to view them as a delicious, blank culinary canvas, though. For one, I think their creamy texture is nothing short of addictive; it adds a velvety mouth-feel to any dish, without adding any fat. Combine that with the fact that they're a great source of inexpensive protein and they're almost impossible to cook incorrectly. This herbed white bean soup recipe is punched up with classic Provencal spices to delicious effect... Read more.

Maple Pumpkin Pie Recipe

Combine two favorite fall flavors! This maple pumpkin pie is a traditional Canadian dessert recipe. Use a store-bought pie shell or make pate sucree in your own kitchen. This easy dessert is so fantastic; there won't be any leftovers... Read more.

Mulled Apple Cider

Chilly weather calls for a warm, sipping beverage that is as easy to prepare as it is delectable. Try rich chocolat chaud for a family affair. Get toasty to your toes with slightly spicy, aromatic mulled apple cider. If you find yourself in need of a beverage for adult palates, look no further than this vin chaud recipe. All of these recipes are tailor-made for blustery autumn days and evenings spent indoors. Enjoy!
