| | Took the dog for a walk this morning and on my way home my eye started to burn -- if you suffer from hay fever you'll know the feeling, though it was only one eye. Since I had to drive down to Florence I did, and by the time I was there my right eye was dripping, and a dark something was appearing from the right side. So I looked in the mirror and saw that it was swelled almost shut, with the membranes an unusual swollen purple (the dark shadow I was seeing).
Yikes! I described it to my doctor (cellphones are wonderful), who said I needed to see an eye doctor and sent me over to the hospital. Where I was third in line at the eye clinic, and sat for about 20 minutes while the ophthalmologist dealt with those in front of me. Turns out I was bitten by a bug of some kind -- he the could see a red spot -- and he prescribed some eye drops I'll be diligently dripping into both eyes for the next couple of days.
Cost of the visit? 18 Euros and 61 cents, about 22 dollars -- it would have been free a few years ago, but they put in a small charge to keep compulsive worriers from setting up camp in hospital clinics. And had it been something more serious worthy of an ER, like the time Daughter C stuck her finger in my eye and scratched my cornea (she was 6 months old), it would have been free. And now, back to food. | | Pizza: Share Pictures! Pizza is one of the most popular foods on the planet, and also one of the prettiest, or at least I think so. And have put together a pizza pictures Show and Tell; if you make (or are served) an especially eye-catching pizza take a picture of it (on your cellphone if you don't have a camera handy) and share it with us. The link above leads to the pizza picture upload page, while you can see the pizza pictures we have so far (just a couple, but I set the thing up last night) here. | Gelato... The weather has been odd of late: Yesterday was unusually cool, especially when it rained, while today was the first really hot day of the year -- the parents milling in the parking lot in front of the school were all looking for shade, something that hadn't been important before now. What to do when this happens? Make gelato! Or shave some ice, and make syrups for Italian ices. | Off to Puglia for a Few Days Tomorrow I'm driving down to Puglia with a friend for Radici, a presentation of fine Puglian wines. We're both going to be judging, and it should be a very interesting experience because Puglian wines have made tremendous strides over the past few years -- time was they were strong, and dark, and much was blended into weaker more northerly Italian (and French) wines, but now the best Puglian wines are second to none (a list of personal favorites). I'll have pictures and a few summer recipes when I get home. | Quick, and Easy Recipes Italian food in film is often substantial, tables groaning under the weight of platters of lasagna and other things. And there is some truth to the picture. But there's just as much truth to the picture of a pasta sauce whipped up in the time it takes the pasta water to boil, or meats that are done in the time it takes to prepare a tossed salad. Here's a selection of quick, mostly easy Italian recipes. | | | | Italian Food Ads | | | | Featured Articles | | | | | | | | Sign up for more free newsletters on your favorite topics | | | | You are receiving this newsletter because you subscribed to the About Italian Food newsletter.
