From Cynthia Nellis, your Guide to Women's Fashion
Fashion Week, for Fall 2010, started off with the sad note that Alexander McQueen had committed suicide.

Fashion Week, Day 1: Moderation is the New Excess

How to be sure luxury has lost its luster? For starters, on the first day of Fashion Week, The Daily -- Fashion Week's pulse-taking publication -- featured shopping buzz kill Suze Orman. Then there's the fact that fashionistas themselves are wrapping up -- not in furs and stilettos -- but in practical black nylon coats, leggings and boots. You might attribute part of this sober trend to the weather, but I've seen seasons past when fashion die hards braved the chill in bare legs and stilettos, all in the name of chic.

One reason moderation is attracting so many followers is because it's become so amazingly attractive. In fashion, popular-priced stores like Gap are churning out great-fitting premium jeans that cost a third of the hoity-toity brands. Even travel -- which I have to admit I've sometimes been a snob about -- has come around. This Fashion Week trip I went moderate with my hotel choice and have been amazed by how my cozy Hampton Inn in Times Square blows away the boutiques and four-stars I've stayed in before. From top-notch customer service to freebies (all-day coffee, free breakfast, free wifi, free cookies,) clean updated rooms and plush beds, this moderately priced hotel is now my new favorite NY stay. Brands and luxury? Nobody cares anymore. All we want are affordable jeans that don't make us look fat and all the free coffee can drink.

Fashion Week, Day 2: Fashion Kids Say the Darndest Things

"I feel so gross," said the 20-something boy in line behind me yesterday. "I'm here with all these cheap prints and fake fur." Occasionally, I'll run across someone at Fashion Week, like gross boy, who is obnoxious and pretentious. But most of the youngsters (let's just say for the purpose of this blog post that's anyone under 30) are fresh and fun and I love talking to them. One fellow show goer told me he was already feeling jaded after his 3rd season of the shows (I didn't have the heart to tell him it was about my 22nd season here.)

Fashion thrives on young voices like Christian Siriano who sent out a surprisingly commercial collection yesterday. Although the Project Runway alum is known for edgy downtown looks his Fall 2010 collection was filled with event dressing of the Oscar de la Renta variety: poufy ballgowns with overblown bows, namely. Charolotte Ronson, on the other hand, took a laid-back approach to the '70s with long loose layers and the best military (hot trend alert!) piece I've seen so far: an army green camp shirt with small gold studs on the back vent.

Fashion Week, Day 3: Glove Lust

chakra gloveThe only thing I really want so far? Sexy gloves. They are on so many runways in everything from lace to leather, and most aren't even the practical, keep-your-hands-warm kinda glove you're familiar with. One stylist I met, had a fantastic little leather, fingerless glove with ruffles that she bought on Etsy.com for just $40. And another show goer had a pair of terribly impractical gloves -- if you could call them that -- that were nothing more than a strip of leather with grommets that hooked around the thumb and extended around the hand. On the runway gloves ranged from lacy at Georges Chakra (pictured, left) and leather at Andy & Debb. (Photo Credit: Stefan Gosatti/Getty Images)
