About Today: What to Pack for Summer Camp

If you can't see this email, click here

About.com

From Jen Hubley, your About Today Editor
The first time I ever packed for summer camp, I think I packed about 30 rolls of unicorn stickers, my jelly sandals, and some Mad Libs. Fortunately, my Mom "checked in" on my packing, and added such non-essential items as underpants and bug spray. (Moms, amirite?)

What to Pack for Summer Camp
I needed this list desperately. Even with Mom's intervention, I think we had to burn my socks when I got home. Turns out, you need more socks than you think.

How Did You Prepare Your Child for Sleepaway Camp?
Getting ready for sleepaway camp was a less hilarious, more grueling experience. I think my mother still has nightmares about me asking how long it would take her to drive to my camp and bring me my blankie, if it turned out I needed it after all.

How to Prevent Homesickness
My Mom's trick: Pack the blankie after all, but put in the lining of the suitcase so no one else would know.

Cut the Cost of Summer Camp
This is a big one: How to send the kids to camp without dipping into their college fund?

From Julyne Derrick, your Guide to Beauty
After 2-plus years of short hair, I've decided to grow out my locks so I'm sporting the tiniest of ponytails right now and I'm actually getting compliments on it. In honor of my love for ponytails (and summer!), I'm sharing with you a gallery of some of my favorite ponies (not of the equine variety). Also, news alert! Miley Cyrus cut her hair so it's no longer to her butt (or maybe she just took out her extensions?) and my list of the best cleansers on the market (I do swear by Pond's, just like the French).

Miley Cyrus Cuts Her Hair Shorter (Finally)
I'm not a fan of hair-down-to-your-hips on anyone. Super long hair is simply excessive, like super long fingernails, so when Miley Cyrus... Read more

About Cruises: Cruising Russian Waterways

From Linda Garrison, your Guide to Cruises
When the long June summer days arrive, I always think about my time in Russia for the White Nights of St. Petersburg. Three summers ago, I sailed the Russian Waterways between St. Petersburg and Moscow with Grand Circle Travel, and learned much about the Russian people and their culture. Join me on a look back at this terrific itinerary and cruise tour.

Grand Circle Russian Waterways M/S Rossia CruiseTour
Grand Circle Small Ship Cruises' M/S Rossia river ship sails a 16-day Russian Waterways cruise between St. Petersburg and Moscow, Russia. This article focuses on a tour of the cabins, deck areas, interior common areas, and dining facilities on the Grand Circle M/S Rossia.

Russian Waterways Itinerary
Russian river ships sail through many quaint towns and villages on their way between St. Petersburg and Moscow. Many of these are relatively unknown to North Americans and other Europeans. This map shows the itinerary and provides links to photos and information of the ports along the way.

Three Days in Moscow
Moscow is a wonderful city to visit, and travelers on river ship cruise tours to St. Petersburg spend a few days in Moscow like I did with Grand Circle Small Ship Cruises. Moscow was our last port on the cruise tour, and we had about three days to see most of the highlights. We disembarked the ship and stayed in a hotel as part of our cruise tour, which was a good plan since river ships must dock about an hour from downtown.

Three Days in St. Petersburg
St. Petersburg is a popular port of call for both cruise ships sailing to Scandinavia and northern Europe, and for river cruises between St. Petersburg and Moscow. Either way provides good opportunities to see this fascinating city.
